Birkebæk Plantage is located 10 km. south of Herning. The area has many good forest trails and some nice vantage points.

At the edge of the forest area are the three Bronze Age mounds "Hjortsballehøje". At the two largest mounds, two stones have been erected to commemorate the foundation of the Hedeselskabet, and they are considered a kind of baptismal certificate for the Danish Hedeselskab.
