Helen's House

Distance: 15.39 Km

Helene's House is the last remaining of 6 poor houses, called "Sammel-sted by". Here, the area's poorest residents were gathered in houses built by Ørre parish in the years after 1815, and the intention was that the poor should contribute to the cultivation of the heath in the area.

The first house was built for the infamous Tatar king, the thug Johs. Axelsen and family, and was called Axelhus. In 1917, a memorial stone, Blicherstenen, was placed on the site of Axelhus in memory of Steen Steensen Blicher, who dedicated the plot in the short story "Kjæltringeliv" to Ørre Hede.

Helene's house was inhabited until 1989 and is now run by Herning Municipality. In the preserved poorhouse there is an exhibition with the history of the poor colony.
Next to Helen's house is a spandrel house and on the other side is a cabbage farm, where, among other things, are different cabbage and berry bushes.

Helene's House is closed in the period 1 Nov. - April 1 every year.

There are tables/bench sets and a toilet.
The toilet is in Helen's house and is therefore locked when the house is locked.

Helenes Hus is part of the walking and cycling route "Brydningstiden", which connects the four cornerstones Helenes Hus, Nazareth, Forsamlinghuset and Nygaard Gl. School.
On the sign at Helenes Hus you can read about the route, and if you have a smartphone, you can also listen to an exciting story. See how on the sign.
