Momhøje Nature Center

Distance: 11.69 Km

Offers nature and activity experiences for everyone. There is a nature playground, disabled path, hiking trails, horse trail, mountain bike route, fixed orientation posts, barbecue areas, tent pitch, shelters, main building with several options; fire barn with large barbecue, exhibition, meeting room, dormitory and toilets.

Momhøje Nature Center covers 80 hectares, equivalent to 120 football pitches. Part of the area is a former lignite bed, which has created the exciting and varied terrain.

When Denmark ran into a serious energy crisis during World War II, lignite was called "the brown gold", and the large lignite deposits east of Videbæk became very important economically for the entire area.
Digging lignite was a tiring and dirty job, but for the hardy there was good money to be made. Many bachelors lived here who dreamed of earning enough money to be able to buy a homestead, but also families with children lived here.
On Momhøje Nature Center you can find information about the large lignite clone dyke that grew up around the lignite bed.

As the coals were often buried deep in the subsoil, some violent "scars" were added to the landscape, which have since been understood to be used positively. At Momhøje Nature Center, the very varied and hilly terrain is very attractive for mountain bike riders.
Here are also good hiking trails, some of which are handicap accessible. Along the routes are coniferous and deciduous forests, grasslands and lakes and unvegetated sandy plains, which testify to the lignite excavation that has taken place in the area.
